Jackal Faith

The Jackals own religious beliefs are strange to many not inducted into the faithful. Much like the Ebonites that first spawned them, they too believed that the Ebon Stone contained a horrid evil. They who had touched the stone and been rejected felt as though they had a connection to the beast within that none, not even the Ebonites, could understand. Touched by it as they were, they knew it’s evil and the destruction it could wreak upon the world. They sought to stop it by any means necessary. The prophecy of the Awakening was known to them, and the goal of the Jackals for centuries was to stop it, through murder, mayhem, and wanton destruction if necessary. The most faithful of the Jackals did terrible things because they knew in their hearts that if they did not, worse things would happen. When the Awakening happened, it shook the faith of the Jackals to the core.

They had been wrong. The Jackals had believed that being rejected by the stone meant that they had proved strong enough to resist the dark god within the Ebon Stone. In truth they had been fooled by the Khayel and had been little more than its pawns. This realization shattered the illusions of many Jackals, and many of those that weren’t exterminated in the aftermath of the Awakening simply disappeared back into the city. The faithful that remained were forced to re-evaluate their beliefs. The Jackals that touched the Ebon Stone, and failed the trial, still feel a connection to the Khayel. They know that reports of its demise have been greatly exaggerated.
